That's a pretty paltry amount compared to my normal levels of printed-word consumption. my cooking and baking record is off the charts, however! this seems to be a combination of my erstwhile fascination with food porn as discovered on tastespotting.com, and the fact that i am losing weight unintentionally (likely due to the rigours of nursing and my lack of car to get cool places) and feel the need to eat several large satisfying meals each day, and to snack on homemade cake and tea in the afternoon. (i also have a post-breakfast snack with my coffee around 10am, usually a piece of toast and a homemade granola bar or energy bar, crammed with nuts and seeds and dried fruits). tomorrow's baking endeavor: hot cross buns from the cheeseboard cookbook. i am loving my nursing job, particularly the variety and the flexibility. i was traumatised by my most recent shift at the gyne ward, however. due to the manic atmosphere, i was asked (as a known competent nursing assistant) to take care of a lady going through a particularly bloody miscarriage at less than twenty weeks. the doctor later asked me to hold the lady's hand while she did an examination. i wasn't expecting her to, a few minutes later, simply reach in and pull out the tiny dead baby, which had been sitting in the vagina. then i had to get a cord clamp and some towels, with my hands about to shake off. after a few kind and informative words, the doctor left. this poor lady, i was crying with her. i'm an oversensitive bank nursing assistant, not permanent on the gyne ward--i wasn't prepared for that sort of thing! the lady held the baby on her chest for the rest of my shift, so every half hour or so when i went in to take her blood pressure, temperature, oxygen sats, and check her catheter, i tried to avoid staring at the little brown body with bulbous head and such tiny arms and legs. i was further upset that, during my break, the lady was rushed to theatre (surgery) for an emergency evac of the placenta....
