The Great Shlep
Bubby took us for mani-pedis. She introduced me to everyone- in the Century Village, in the nail salon, the supermarket… I’m her granddaughter, came for a visit. We talked. She told me it will all work out, that I’ve matured a lot in the past few years, she doesn’t worry about me landing on my feet, I’m strong. We fit in passover shopping two weeks early and she told us life is too short to hold grudges- especially with family. We don’t hold grudges in my family. Then she snuck in a little joke about my over-fed love handles. She even grabbed and jiggled said love handles as she laughed, in a public place. She gave me a new scarf… if I’d promise to take off the one I was already wearing, she didn’t like it. Then she gave my cousin one too, so she wouldn’t feel left out of the fashion scrutiny fun. All in a few days’ visit to Florida. You can travel the world for a year and never get as much done as my Bubbi does by 8am in West Palm.
She doesn’t have a high school education, but she’s done just fine for herself over the years, amazingly resilient and independent considering it all. God Bless Her. She has been so supportive of me, throughout all of my different challenges and she has assured me along the way that my family practically breeds strong women. Her acceptance of my choices and our choices and the world that has changed around her is unfathomable. She traveled a long way from war-torn Poland and Germany, she outlived her husband and she’s not angry, or sad- though she has all the right to be. She’s happy, she loves her life, she loves her family, she is remarried to a great guy and she loves living in Florida.
Finally, after all of these years of just being loved...
