My Darling Fred,
This is only letter number three so don’t worry about missing some of them. I have just been very lax about writing. My single track mind has been busy with putting in LAWN. Yesterday Kenneth and I managed to finish all of it, over 8,000 sq. ft. It has been a tremendous job, the large side one and the petite one on the north. Fortunately for us the weather has held up just perfect the whole time - such lovely warm days and very little wind. Clouds were coming today a little, but don’t know for sure if they will bring a storm or just pass over as a few others have done during the last month. Today I started the arduous job of keeping it all moist for two weeks at least. Dennis has given me considerable trouble in one way or another, but I think I have him under control now. He must run on a big runner of canvas on the soft earth. It is quite a procedure and wind goofs it up.
After an unsuccessful Sunday a week ago with two small rototillers, I got it cultivated this week with a big one which left it so soft and deep that I was even more discouraged about the job. By use of wits I located a small bulldozer (and I do mean small) that came Saturday and leveled it very nicely for $12.00 and also managed to compact it so we could walk across it to finish it off. Sunday we finished leveling, raked seeded, rolled, etc. fertilized etc. I was so relieved when it was done before a change in the weather. I think it will be stupendous. Kenneth carried off trash and we are very neat inside the civilized areas now.
We are enjoying your many letters so much. The one that came today was Amritsar. We received your cablegram on the third, although it was in Reno on the second. Something about delivery from there being unsuccessful; so I suppose they missed me on the phone. We are waiting for the adventures between the 28th and the 1st . Are you under the wire for the pay raise in July or not?
