Do you ever find yourself surprised at how much time has flown by, following a particular event, or period? You may well feel that way, after reading today’s look back, that is, if you remember 1962; some forty-seven years ago.

However, before we jump into our look back, I want to take a moment to mention another major event that happened on this date, twenty-one years, prior. December 7, 1941, the day in which President Franklin Roosevelt stated “…will live in infamy”, the attack on Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese, which launched the United States into World War 2. We, of course, ultimately won the war, thanks to the incredible sacrifice of the men and women of that generation, who proudly dawned the military uniforms of the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and the many other countries who were part of the Allied power. Almost seventy years, now, have passed, since the start of the war, the number of those men and women dwindle, daily. It’s amazing, even for those of us who grew up twenty-some years, later, to think that in just a few more years, those numbers, which are still in the thousands, will soon be down to the hundreds, and then down to just a few veterans (much like World War 1, today), before being gone, forever. Take a few moments, today, to thank someone you know, for their part in protecting our freedom, so many years ago.

Now, let’s take a look back to this week, in 1962.

December 7

December 7th, fell on a Friday, in 1962. On this day, there was nuclear testing

happening in Nevada, but it wasn’t the United States; it was Great Britain. Good thing they had forgiven us for that little incident back in the 1770’s.

December 8

Beginning today, finding a newspaper in New York City was practically impossible, as their newspaper strike began, and would last for a while; 114 days, to be exact. If that were to happen today, with all of the news channels and computer technology, no one would likely even notice.
