Riding Equipment

It looks like I’m going to need a couple of pieces of equipment if I plan on riding the bike any amount this summer.  Nothing out of the ordinary, but enough stuff that it’s a pain to have to buy it.  Just like with any other type of equipment I’ll need to decide before I buy it if I want something cheap that will do for now or if I want to spend some money and get things that will last for awhile.

The first thing I’ll need to get is a helmet.  I don’t like wearing helmets and even after I buy one I most likely won’t wear it for little runs around town.  What I want it for is to cut the wind when I’m running at highway speeds.  I took the bike down the interstate for a couple miles yesterday and the wind whippin’ by at 75+ is enough to make you deaf…and after prolonged exposure I’ll end up with wind burn on my face.  With the couple of adjustments I’ve made to the bike and the girth of my ass, it’s much more enjoyable and comfortable to ride it out of town.

There are a couple of things I think are important when I’m looking for a helmet.  Obviously fit is important, but I also want a couple other things that is probably going to push the price up a little bit.

I want the helmet to have a removable liner.  You’re going to sweat in it and I want to be able to pull the guts out and throw them in the washing machine. I want it to have a dual shield type system.  I want the main shield on the outside then a tinted shield on the inside.  I’d rather not wear my sunglasses under it.  I want both of the shields to be able to be slid up so I can use one at a time or both at the same time. vents, it needs to be vented well.  The only full face helmets I’ve worn have been on snowmobiles and those would fog up pretty fast.  I think in the summer it’s going to be even more important to get some good air around the helmet.

I did some looking online and it seems like I can get one for around 120 or so, then tack on some shipping.  There are a few for 70 or so and some that edge a little cheaper than that.  The question is do I want to get a cheap one and get a better one later if need be or should I get what I think I want?  I’m going to look around at a motorcycle shop this afternoon and see what they have.  Maybe I can get something I want local…I doubt it, but we’ll see.
