Today's Hike: Calcite Mine
Today's hike wasn't really much of a hike as it was a "let's look for wildflowers in the desert and do a short little walk." Craig had never been to the desert before, so it was also an introduction for him. I'd looked a bit before, and some online reports at desertusa.com said that the Calcite Mine had some interesting stuff in bloom, so off we went. We headed out at 9 and drove east on the 8, stopping briefly in Lakeside for sandwiches and chips at a Vons just south of the freeway. It was a warm sunny clear day (already 65 degrees!) and we caught ourselves wondering what the hulking mountain across the valley was. A quick glance at the guidebook told us it was El Capitan, a 3600' peak of massive jumbled granite boulders with an 11 mile hike to the summit. Sounds fun--and there's next week's hike :-) Driving east, we got off at Sunrise Highway to scout out the Lagunas, one of my favorite hiking places near San Diego. Brrr was it cold and windy up there--the car thermometer hovered around 45F (8C), and it was still looking a little wintery; the oak trees hadn't started to leaf out at all and there was just the barest whisper of green grass poking through the ground. Looks like another three or four weeks before it starts getting going and interesting up there. From the crest of the Lagunas, though, there's this great lookout that faces east towards the desert, and in the space of a hundred feet or so the piney oak woodland gives way to desert scrub, a crisp line between the mountains and desert. The lookout's also on top of a steep 5000' high cliff, and as we looked down we could see the desert wasn't quite the brown tan color it is in the summer--there was a bit of green and yellow from the wildflowers below on the desert floor.
