Night and day
Went to a friend's birthday party on Saturday afternoon -- a joint affair for her and her daughter (40th for my friend, 6th for her daughter). She, her pharmacist hubby and their three kids had just moved to a new house in a posh town known for its good schools. When I got to their new abode, I saw a giant bouncy house in the back yard, filled with kids. Milling around were various parents -- lots of chunky, balding/graying Asian guys with Bluetooths clipped to their ears cracking wise with cans of beer, and harried moms chasing after their charges with paper plates of food. I hadn't seen my friend, whom I've known since babyhood, in six years. She still looked good, as did her sister, but a lot of the folks at the party shocked me with their middle-aged spread. These people were around my age, but it felt like I was at a party of my parents and their friends. It was all so...blandly suburban. That night, I went to a show where some of Steven's musician friends from the Bay Area were going to be. One of them was performing with his band . It was in a sketchy part of town, in what looked like a furniture factory/warehouse. It wasn't an officially licensed event venue, so the organizers kept trying to hustle people inside off the sidewalk, not wanting to attract attention. There was a makeshift bar that consisted of an ice chest, a fridge, disposable cups and a bottle opener, but it totally worked. A couple panels of cloth were tacked up on the ceiling behind a raised platform that served as the stage. I spotted the guys from Giant Robot , and the crowd was dressed in the requisite skinny jeans, fitted Ts and kicks. Ear plugs were handed out to the show attendees, for which I was soon grateful. The acts were ear-splitting, head-banging, crazy loud. Flickering on the wall behind the stage was what looked like a soft-core pornographic exercise video from the '80s. I mean, the women in the video were fully clothed, but something about the angle, the lighting...
